Halloween is a fun holiday that children look forward to each year, but it’s actually my least favorite holiday. Yep, it is. I dread the amount of sugar that seems to be the focus of many holidays, and this is one of the worst. (I actually strongly dislike all the spooky, scary, yucky stuff that is so prevalent as well, but that’s another story.)

Now, I know I could skip trick-or-treating all together if I cared that much, and I would happily do so if my kids wouldn’t stage an uprising. Believe me, it crosses my mind every year to plan an alternative activity. I propose the idea and let my kids choose between the two. I get out-voted every year. Haha. I do have fun memories of trick-or-treating as a child, and I’m ok with letting my children enjoy the excitement and fun as well. I also love answering the door and seeing my cute little neighbor kids and their parents.

Here are some non-candy alternatives to pass out to little pumpkins and ghosts on Halloween night. Yes, I realize not all  little trick-or-treaters will be as excited about some of these items, but they aren’t always excited about the candy they get either, so . . .

We’ve handed out glow bracelets the last several years, and they are always a huge hit. I also like that it helps tiny kids be just a little more visible when it’s dark outside.
